Credible conservatism went out with the Nixon era--but I personally believe TV to be the biggest culprit, for reasons I think should be obvious.
I don't think it's coming back. Quite the contrary--in fact it's an increasing problem not only at the federal level but also in local elections (thanks for that, too, SCOTUS).
Have to agree with you on that.
When the **** did I become a weirdo? We've been pumping out volunteer projects to repair homes, cars, and stock the pantries of veterans in our community with the Legion for the past couple years, and the look on people's faces when I knock on their door and ask them for $5 to help keep their WWII veteran neighbor from being put in a nursing home by the State.
Granted I have found some very powerful allies, particularly in my corporate executive neighbor who has donated almost $5,000 to buy groceries for the old guys on my list, but the number of people who are actively looking to contribute to protecting their communities is pretty damn slim.
