I have traced this back to the original 2 dozen "Sporters".....they were the same weapon sold to the military - except they were modified to comply with ATF regs. These were distributed to members of the board at Colt to celebrate the 2nd order from the military.

The first order came from the Air Force, ca. 1962....for semi auto AR-15s.
