Movies are one of the things america has led in for a hundred years. They are the art form that is most easily available to the commoners and the elite alike. You need a lit degree to appreciate Faulkner, patience and curiosity to appreciate Michener, and education in music to appreciate the symphony. But a movie? The fact that 90% of what hollywood produces is dreck isn't problematic. First, there is a market for dreck, and filling that market makes jobs, Second, 90% of EVERYTHING is dreck - nature of the planet. Finally, if hollywood could bat a thousand, what they do would be easy and we would do it for ourselves.
I have enormously enjoyed watching films over my lifetime. I am sorry to see Hollywood going to ****. I hope they pull their heads out. But I do have to admit, they've been a steaming bowl of **** for a long damned time, and it just might be better for america if the whole damned thing got flushed down the toilet.
