I think there is some truth to that. People would be more accepting - or, for the most part, give them little notice - if they didn't make such a song and dance about it. Franky, I couldn't care less. If you are lucky enough to find someone that makes you happy, God bless. But don't display your junk on Main Street and expect to get no pushback. I wouldn't want heterosexual couples flaunting out in the open either.
