A pandemic could be unleashed by a microbe that has been frozen for thousands of years unless we get Climate Change under control.Scientists from the Information Genomique et Structurale (IGS-CNRS) laboratory in Marseille, France are warning of a potential new pandemic caused by viruses frozen for over 30,000 years in the Arctic.Global warming and increased human activity in the region are accelerating the thawing process, making it likely that ancient viruses, including the 'zombie virus' Pithovirus sibericum, could be released, leading to the emergence of new diseases.
 Researchers have isolated strains of the 'zombie virus' to prevent its potential global spread. A surveillance network is being planned in the Arctic to identify and treat any possible diseases resulting from thawed viruses.The 'zombie virus' was discovered in Siberian permafrost in northwestern Siberia, where it had been frozen for thousands of years. The virus is named for its ability to come back to life after such a long period of inactivity.The scientists' discovery raises concerns about the possibility of ancient viruses causing a global outbreak if not properly managed.
 "We don't know what viruses are lying out there in the permafrost but I think there is a real risk that there might be one capable of triggering a disease outbreak - say of an ancient form of polio," said Dr. Noah Bhodi of New Delhi University."We have to assume that something like this could happen."The potential for such events underscores the need for precautions and monitoring to prevent and respond to emerging infectious threats from thawed Arctic microbes.
