I know for a fact that according to economic records around 1700, jews controlled the majority of sugar commerce that was shipped to all of europe. I have not investigated this particular subject, but it would not surprise me at all if jewish families maintained their dominance in sugar cane and their control of media and government regulations is the reason the usa consumes so much sugar compared to other countries.
