There is actually no such thing as 'fiat currency'. Since the beginning of currency, what really backed currency is political power. Political power actually matters and gold kinda doesn't. The usa is able to live off debt because we are the world reserve currency. We are the world reserve currency because we have the most aircraft carriers.
