I got very lucky. At 8, I was living in Bolivia, and there were Guerillas fighting the soldiers in the hills. They were led by Che Guevara, who was killed the day that we left Santa Cruz.

Before that happened, as the fighting intensified in the hills above Santa Cruz, I asked my mom if it was true that guerillas were fighting soldiers in the hills. She assured me that it was true. I asked if the guerillas (which I believed meant gorillas) had guns. She said of course they have guns. I asked who gave them guns, and she said people who agreed with them.

At that point, in my world, anything became possible, and people's motives always bore examination. I never trusted **** after that.

As far as I am concerned, that the world is flat and surrounded by ice is still one possibility. Or, this might be a simulation - and the trees and hills might just be a cheap projection until I approach them, at which time they will produce their illusions with greater granularity. It might be that my emotions are being fed upon - or that I am a conduit to God, to alleviate His boredom. Never getting to die might be a real horror, after all.

I am willing to fight for and stand upon the things that my DNA program me to stand upon and fight for: defending the defenseless, contributing to and being fair with and generous to to my tribe, searching for truth with no other agenda than to find it. The one thing in the world I trust is my DNA, because it makes me what I am. I strive to turn what I am into who I am.
