The original purpose of the stock market (invented back in the 1600s) was to pool hidden sources of capital (from Sephardic Jews? Don’t recall the exact constituents) to finance otherwise illicit endeavors and cloaking them in legitimacy.
Interesting to see that 4 centuries later, this still remains the case (eg Amazon, Google, Meta are Dept of Defense / CIA projects to carry out mass surveillance rather than being some “innovative” giant tech companies)
For the vast majority of history, people did not touch stock because it was well known that equity could collapse 80%, 90%, and even 100% overnight. They bought bonds yielding 5-7%.
The US stock market might be the greatest “innovation” from J-U-Us given its exceptional returns - a facet unlikely to last past the 21st century.
the history of the stock market is quite fascinating and muti faceted. Two of the biggest drivers of the stock market historically were the east India tea company and the railroads. But there were also endless other footnotes for example in Vienna and Amsterdam.
to be honest, based on my own research (and yeah I have read sombart) it is difficult to find some smoking gun to pin it on jews. Many gentiles were involved in the stock market. But jews were always present also...and the thing with jews is that they seem to coordinate their efforts well even if they are living on a totally different continent. Jews typically have a pan jewish identity, while Europeans in general usually focus more on their specific ethnic group and individual profit, rather than considering global agendas.
Dutch jews...specifically jews in Amsterdam fleeing the Spanish inquisition, were always a key player in the stock market. And it just seems fitting that new York (formerly new amsterdam) became the home of the biggest stock market on earth.
