Diaspora is a term used to describe a group of people who have a shared cultural and regional origin but live away from their traditional homeland. The word comes from Greek and means "to scatter". People who identify with a specific geographic location but live elsewhere are also referred to as a diaspora. The IOM defines diasporas as "migrants or descendants of migrants, whose identity and sense of belonging have been shaped by their migration experience and background".
