A falling tree moves air molecules. It requires a receiver to detect moving air molecules. The air molecules moves the ear drum to initiate the creation of an electric signal to the brain which is perceived as sound.
You can read "stfu", but you can't hear it. But you can recreate the sound in yer head cause you are very familiar with the sound "stfu".
