This pretty much means one has to have singular focus and a bulldog determination to stay the course.

Most people cannot live at a subsistence level and still be contented, much less happy.
Little kids weather that storm and parents can "do it for the children" for years...
Much of the time those children don't catch on until 12-13 years how truly **** they are.
...and then it's a slow realization.
Not caring if toys are "just like new" is one thing. Kids play with anything.
Hand-me-down clothes and always needing a ride from someone starts to get tiresome.
It can be done has real limits. Good parenting is an art.
