That's an interesting concept...if you're familiar with the John Deere lawsuit against them because they hold the proprietary software in their equipment not allowing anyone access but their service centers to repair...with a **** of farmers suing them because of the delay of repairs exacerbated by poor timing during planting and harvesting...imagine sitting there with a $500,000 piece of equipment sitting in the field for a few weeks...a business killer I'd guess as they won't put up with that ****...
the local mechanic says automakers are edging that way due to revenue stream and yes, control your vehicle...I assume the JD case outcome will determine that future...
Try finding a hard copy tech manual for a late model Nissan....Nissan only wants their Dealers capable of doing the repairs.
Of course if you try hard enough you can glean enough info to work on them but the typical buyer wont.
The MFGs know that as the public becomes increasingly helpless [aka GAY] they can get away with murder as far as factory support goes.
They have less worries about doing harm to their reputation thanks to a more helpless [gay] public.
