You know how people like Trump and Musk keep repeating this line (or some variation):
I’m a billionaire / I’m wealthy, therefore I cannot be bought.
Well it turns out there was a quotation from a century ago that refuted this “reasoning:”
“You will hear everlastingly, in all discussions about newspapers, companies, aristocracies, or party politics, this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man.” ~ G.K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936)
