I'm satisfied that you can't distinguish "variant" from "design"...

Now, looking at the following excerpt, to how many "families" and "designs" does it make reference?

From the embedded PDF.   That is the original BATF classification letter for the AR 15.  Machinegun category is the verbiage for automatic weapons used by the BATF.
