Here's another interesting fact.  Hardly any of the American communes from the 1960's and even before that, still exist.  As far as I can tell, only one such commune continues to exist today, The Farm, founded in 1971.

This commune however nearly failed in the 80s.  Pooling everyone's resources was failing miserably.  So, they changed the rules.  Now even though it still has communal property (not much different from a land-condominium), its inhabitants had to begin self-supporting themselves. In other words, they had to figure out ways to make their own money and pay their own expenses.  I would say that's no longer a real commune - and all resource-pooling communes failed.
