oh the parties...winning stupid prizes...

my mother and I went "home" to Germany when I was 13...for my 14th birthday, Oma made up a punch of peaches soaked in whiskey for 24 hours, added wine, Champagne and it was game on...Tanta Gustel was a wispy 75 yo who cleaned castles at all of 80# was dancing with a broom in dress and tennis shoes...needless to say, it was my first experience with "the spins"...

Then it was off to my dad's sister's in the Black Forest...3 cousins my age and older...went into a bar established in 1498...I was told if I could get up on the barstool, I'd be served...no one blinked an eye...

I spoke German exclusively until 4...when we immigrated here, the transition started, but we had to speak German in the house or it fell on deaf ears with the old man...

Small world isn't it?

too bad so much is lost so fast...in just a couple of generations family history and traditions fall by the wayside
