How does it supposedly work?

Gas combusts and heats a sodium rod. It emits at nearly the exact same frequency as the photocell receptor.. Supposedly 78% of the heat of combustion energy turns into electric boogie woogie.

We all kind of said back in the day (20 years ago) that the propane one for UAV's was expensive and a lump of 750F stuff was a bit much to fly around with. It doesn't have to be Hydrogen.  Drill Baby Drill Gas works too.
