More like the squished snot blob you didn't see at first that used to be a slug on the rake handle.
I'm talking about forest slugs - gorgeous creatures, gentle-giant herbivores.
Now, I know they're only 4 or 5 inches long. But most of the creatures with which they share an economy are much smaller - making them giants. And they are exceptionally beautiful: almost translucent, with lovely patches of color. Their comings and goings across the rain forest floor used to give me hours of entertainment. I would select an area and decide that it was the entire known world - my temporary Serengeti. I would look at only the things in that domain. Shrinking my world thus, I elevated theirs, making all of the creatures in my selected square yard life-sized. And I would watch the busy-ness of the nameless creatures of my world, examining what they did and sorting why they did it. And from time to time, a forest slug would enter, traverse, disappear into the world that currently wasn't. And when that happened, it was almost as if trumpets were blowing. Compared to everything else in that square yard of forest floor, they were enormous and spectacular and colorful and beautiful. I hated to see them go.
