I think the limit was 6 miles for your very own pair of wires [unless you were on a "party line"] to carry the signal from the phone company's main switching station to your house.

Relatively expensive to use for long distance calls..let's not forget.
Whenever a tree would crash into the high voltage power lines the crash energy was mostly absorbed at that point. The tree would continue to fall into the phone cable, but more gently so.
99% of the time the 1000 pair phone cable was strong enough to keep America talking.
What I really "Truly" HATE these days.
The Internet and Social Media made entire "Complete" MORONS too.
They cant count out "Change" or even "Basic" Commom Sense
They dont wanna speak with ya anymore neither the in the House on "Face-Book"
Even your Doctor & Insurance company "Spam" ya give us a "Rating" too on Facebook
