What then emerged, from Trump’s two-hour phone call with Putin on Monday, was a meaningless agreement to seek an agreement, along with a reaffirmation of hardline Russian positions that ensure no agreement will occur. Trump took office pledging to end this war within 24 hours. He keeps failing, due to two fundamental and increasingly obvious facts.

The first is that he misdiagnosed the problem as Ukrainian intransigence, rather than Putin’s unwillingness to allow that country to survive as a territorially viable, geopolitically independent state. Thus, the second fact: At this stage, there is no compromise to be had. The war will continue until Ukraine capitulates and becomes a dismembered, demilitarized Russian satrapy — or until Putin concludes that the price of winning that prize is far too high.
