Speaking of lying.....the Navy abandoned the Marines after the landing.  The marines did not have the airfield, and there was no Navy ships to be evacuated to.

Japanese ships received minimal damage, according to History And Heritage Command, which cited the battle as one of the worst defeats in U.S. naval history.
