When the **** did I become a weirdo? We've been pumping out volunteer projects to repair homes, cars, and stock the pantries of veterans in our community with the Legion for the past couple years, and the look on people's faces when I knock on their door and ask them for $5 to help keep their WWII veteran neighbor from being put in a nursing home by the State.
Granted I have found some very powerful allies, particularly in my corporate executive neighbor who has donated almost $5,000 to buy groceries for the old guys on my list, but the number of people who are actively looking to contribute to protecting their communities is pretty damn slim.
It's fatigue. Every corner has a veteran drug user begging help in the name of patriotism. EVery grocery store parking lot has a mother with child, begging for food. Every median at every traffic signal has a can to help the firefighters save the children at Saint Jude's kitten rescue and soup kitchen,
As voluminous as the anti-soup line programs are, we're coming back to soup lines. People are give-out. And the **** drugs the bankers and CIA keep peddling to the underclass just add to the whole problem, making those who CAN help suspicious and edgy.
