Official data confirms the nearly 4,000 licensed daycares crammed within a 20-mile radius of downtown Boston, fueling suspicions of widespread fraud in taxpayer-funded child care programs
The large number of centers, mapped out using public records from the state's Department of Early Education and Care, includes everything from large centers to small in-home operations, many tucked into residential apartments and condos in high-migrant neighborhoods.
While state officials say there is a legitimate demand for thousands of daycares in that area, critics point to Minnesota's massive daycare fraud, where Somali migrant networks are allegedly stealing hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars each year, through fake daycares, with some of the money being funneled overseas to support terrorism.
