I can assure you that there are places in the world where the cost of living is much higher than Cali and Manhattan, son, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich consistently rank as the top three. None of those are in California.

It's demographic top grading. It only takes 1 immigrant making 200k, to replace the "product" of 3 emigrants making 60k.
