If you are agreeable to med students getting a free ride, then why not STEM? Engineers, computer scientists, etc...These are all also pillars of our society. They just don't get the same recognition. Most of the tech that the medical industry uses was designed by some field in engineering. It all works together. I agree that stupid degrees should not be covered. They shouldn't be offered as far as I am concerned. 

I also paid for kids college. They were lucky that they had parents who could. What about the bright and talented kids that don't come from the same background? This isn't about equality or even equity. It's about  using the talent that we have to make our society and economy flourish. Dropping bombs in the middle East do nothing for our country. Shift that money to Americans. It's our money. 

Yes, the reason for high tuition is exactly what you stated. Universities are greedy. If they are given a dollar, they will take $100.
