The original microbe was discovered in the late 1960s in a soil sample collected near a golf course in Kawana, Japan, by microbiologist Satoshi Ōmura. He sent the bacterial cultures to William C. Campbell at Merck Research Laboratories in New Jersey, where scientists isolated a family of active compounds called avermectins.
Ivermectin was developed as a chemically modified, semi-synthetic derivative of these natural avermectins, and was first introduced for veterinary use in 1981 before being adapted for humans.
