Human vs. Animal Formulations
- Concentration: Animal formulations (like horse paste or cattle pour-on) are meant for animals weighing up to 1,500 pounds. Human doses are carefully calculated by weight in milligrams (mg). Taking an animal-grade dose will massively overdose a human.
- Inactive Ingredients: Animal drugs contain fillers and carriers that are not tested or approved for human consumption.
- Regulation: Human ivermectin must be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider and is manufactured under strict quality controls for purity and safety.
- For Humans: Approved by the FDA exclusively to treat specific parasitic infections (such as intestinal strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis), as well as topical treatments for head lice and rosacea. Ivermectin is not approved to treat or prevent COVID-19 or cancer.
- For Animals: Used to prevent heartworm in dogs and cats, and to control internal and external parasites (worms, mites, lice) in cattle, sheep, swine, and horses.
