The 1911 isn't a hand cannon by any stretch.
It's chambered in .45 acp which travels just faster than the speed of stink. 10mm auto,.41 mag,.44 mag and S&W 500 are the real hand cannons. All can and are used to hunt big game. The .45 acp not so much.
I wouldn't fool with a Desert Eagle or a Judge.
They're novelty guns at best.

The AR 12 shotgun is just an AR 10 lower with a 12 gauge upper. 2 pins is all it takes to swap it back with a .308 upper to return it to an AR 10. Just like you can put a 6.5 creedmore or 450 bushmaster upper or 20 gauge or 410 on an AR 15 lower.
The AR 12 shotgun is notably unreliable.
. The plastic shot shells deform if left loaded in the magazine resulting in failure to feed.
If you want a reliable semi auto shotgun for self or home defense the Mossberg 940 or the Benelli m4 are much better choices.
They're tube fed and are proven over time to be very reliable. They can be stood in a corner to be ready just in case and you know it'll work.

That more powerful handguns may have been developed doesn't change the ambition of the original designer.
