ABC News settled the defamation lawsuit to avoid a lengthy and costly trial, mitigate the risk of releasing potentially embarrassing internal communications during discovery, and prevent the case from reaching conservative-leaning appellate courts that could threaten broader press protections. 


Donald Trump's lawsuit stemmed from a March 2024 interview where ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos repeatedly stated that Trump had been found liable for "rape", whereas a New York jury had actually found him civilly liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Facing a strong defamation claim and the impending depositions of both Stephanopoulos and Trump, the network opted to resolve the dispute out of court.


As part of the settlement agreement, ABC News:

• Contributed $15 million to a nonprofit earmarked for Trump's future presidential foundation and library.
• Paid $1 million to cover Trump's legal fees.
• Published a statement of regret and appended an editor's note to the original story online.
