My take: He was just a brainwashed kid that got caught up by the Israeli government somehow. I lean toward the exploding mic.
However,the mic is a lot smaller than a pager. Maybe too small to carry the charge and the receiver to set it off? It's actually quite fascinating to think they could do it though.
