He's STILL a NY TIMES WRITER!!Bret Stephens is generally classified as a conservative, though he identifies as an "independent thinker" and has described himself as the "conservative wing of the liberal church". He is known for AllSides as leaning right in his traditional views on free enterprise, free trade, and American foreign policy.
However, he does not fit neatly into today's mainstream Republican alignments. Stephens has been a vocal critic of the modern Republican party's shift toward Donald Trump and populism, and he holds hawkish, center-right views on a number of domestic issues while challenging ideological orthodoxy on both the political left and right
