President Donald Trump has always liked to boast about the loyalty of his voters. But in South Texas, where the construction industry is being battered by immigration raids, industry leaders are starting to defect from the Republican Party. It’s a remarkable shift in political allegiance in a region that Trump dominated in 2024. 

It should be a flashing red light for the GOP, said long-time Republican Massey Villarreal, president and CEO of Houston-based consulting firm Precision Task Group. He recalled that when immigrants were surging across the border during the Biden administration, “You would see these ‘Trump trains’ in South Texas with half a mile of trucks with Trump flags on them. Today, there’s the same thing, but the flag is now ‘F-- Trump,’” he told me. Trump’s approval in Texas is at an all-time low, at 43%, according to the Texas Politics Project, with 52% of the state voters unhappy with this performance.....
