How come we can't have a strong military for defense only? I am good with having a formidable military..for defense only. The two are mutually exclusive. It is very possible to have unparalleled military might and peace at the same time.

WE as a nation were in an ISOLATIONIST POSTURE and lost bigly for nearly a year. WE only had ~600,000 men in uniform at that time. Had the BATTLE OF MIDWAY been a success by the Japanese, there is a good chance we would have capitulated to their demands and lost the war totally.
