He's the man!
Colonel Cooper was the man behind the 10mm. auto.
He wanted a self defense round that bridged the gap between common duty loads and magnum pistol loads. He came up with the 10mm. In it's original configuration the cartridge developed by NORMA hurled a 200gr bullet 1,200 fps. As fast as 9mm. and more penetration and more energy delivered on target than the .45acp. Almost .41 magnum power.
After trials where it was found some FBI agents couldn't handle the size or recoil the .40 s&w or 10mm.lite was developed and used by the FBI and law enforcement until bullet technology for the 9mm. caught up to the .40. Or so the 9mm. fanboys say. The 10mm. cartridge is also the basis for the .357 sig. A real screamer.
The 10mm. auto survived to this day and has seen a surge in sales lately. It's used for anything from self defense against people up to but not limited to bears. The Sirius ski patrol of Norway carries them to defend against polar bears. Ted Nugent used one to bag a Cape Buffalo.
I myself carry a 10mm. Glock pistol every day as my choice for self defense loaded with a 200gr. hollow point that travels 1250fps.
