I’ve traced this back almost 20 years. One example is Hasbara paying Israeli college students and people in Germany to defend Israel online. I also once found a PR climate group (from Calgary Canada) paying three “climate change” trolls. This was on Yahoo Answers. I have to say, that certainly seems johnny's speed.
I am guessing some moneyed people thought paying forum users was a great idea because they assumed a far reach. Forums however, probably are not what they used to be. They have become stale and static. Old habits however, die hard, and I guess some of the shill funders still see paid posting as valuable.
