"Liberal Arts" and "the Western Canon" were once almost synonymous.
To say the VERY least... knot-knee-more.
Y'see, the Western Canon is valuable and laudatory and weighty and impressive and potent. Buuuut...
It was written by dead white men. And THAT is a pejorative in today's academia. THAT is a group that the cool kids have rejected - without replacing them with much that is powerful or sturdy or cogent; without replacing them with much that is worthy
at ail - leave alone of near value.
And that is not to take anything AWAY from Eudora Welty or Khalil Gibran or Gabriel García Márquez. I've read all three and don't want my time back. I have nothing but respect for each. It is, rather, to point out that art stands apart from artist, and whoever judges art by artist is a piss-poor judge of art.
The academic left COULD have widened the field, elbowing some space for people like Paulo Coelho, Salman Rushdie, and Toni Morrison. It would not have taken much of an elbow. Instead, the shrews that make up the academic left banished DWMs (dead white males) horse and foot. They have the upper hand, currently. Mediocrity is mocking us, undermining us, shrinking us. It is sitting in the catbird seat. If you are a college student, it's what's for dinner.
