1. "Pup Play"
Before joining the government, Brinton gave a university presentation on "pup play"—a kink/role-playing subculture where participants wear leather masks and role-play as dogs. This practice is strictly a human-only role-playing activity and does not involve real animals, bestiality, or animal cruelty.
2. Involvement with the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence"
Critics also targeted Brinton's involvement with the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an LGBTQ+ charity and protest group where members dress in drag as nuns. This group is a political and community service organization and has nothing to do with animals.
3. Separation from Government
Brinton did not remain in the role long. In late 2022, they were separated from the Department of Energy after being arrested and charged in connection with stealing women's luggage from airport baggage claims
