On His Faith and Character:
U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) criticized Talarico at the Texas GOP Convention, stating: "It's somebody who will hollow out your most deeply held Christian faith and wear it like a skin suit.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick similarly denounced Talarico at the convention, telling the crowd: "I'll take a poorly dressed conservative Republican over a crazy, insane, blasphemous, fake Christian." Patrick also referenced a 2021 comment where Talarico said he considered himself "a Christian who hates Christianity."
On His Stances on Gender and Family:
Conservative media and Republican officials seized on unearthed comments where Talarico suggested that a parent's unwillingness to acknowledge a child's gender identity could border on abuse. Zach Kraft, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee (RNC), slammed Talarico in a statement to Fox News, saying: "Only perverts and pedophiles think about what is in little kids' pants as much as James Talafreako. He is a truly sick individual for dedicating his life to pushing sex changes on other people's kids."
GOP Campaign Labeling:
His opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton—endorsed by President Donald Trump—has routinely used sharp nicknames on the campaign trail and in ads, labeling Talarico "Low T Talarico," "Tofu Talarico," "Six-gender Jimmy," and "James Tala-freako" while attacking his record on religion and energy.
President Trump also targeted Talarico during a speech in Dallas, noting that the Democrat had previously "claimed that the Ten Commandments are a form of fascism."
