It isn't so much about government contracts. Private companies contract with the government all the time. Our roads, bridges, freeways, libraries...etc...are mostly built by private companies with our money. No big deal. The difference is that the government funded infrastructure provides a public benefit. The ROI is profitable for the taxpayer. We invest our taxes and in return the taxpayer gets benefits from it such as the infrastructure. The private companies profit. Good. They are providing a good service for the public. However, Tesla does nothing for the public. Nothing. The taxpayer gets 0 ROI. Yet, Musk gets billions.
