1. Median Strategies (August 2026)

• What happened: A previously unknown firm named Median Strategies posted fake poll results online covering races in states like California, Wisconsin, and Nevada. 

• Key examples: It published a fabricated poll showing Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass with a large lead, and another showing Wisconsin candidate Francesca Hong up by 23 points in a primary she later lost. 

• The admission: After being questioned by reporters from the Los Angeles Times, the company admitted the numbers were fake, withdrew all data, and shut down its website. They stated it was an experiment to see how polling data enters the ecosystem without independent verification. 

2. Wedgewood Polling (October 2026)

• What happened: A second organization, Wedgewood Polling, admitted that the vast majority of its polling data—which had given sizable leads to Democrats in states like Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Maine, Ohio, and Kansas—was entirely made up.

• Impact: The fake surveys were cited by major news outlets (including The New York Times) and aggregated on platforms, influencing candidate coverage and campaign perceptions in races involving figures like Abdul El-Sayed and Mallory McMorrow in Michigan.

• The admission: After polling aggregator FiftyPlusOne questioned their methodology, Wedgewood posted on X that it was a test to see how easy it is for a fake polling firm to gain traction and get taken seriously.

• Aftermath: Major outlets and aggregators scrubbed the data, and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned broadcasters that airing or amplifying fake election poll data violates federal license rules regarding news distortion and hoaxes.
