Lying to Congress—whether under oath (perjury) or simply making a false statement in a matter within congressional jurisdiction—is a federal felony that carries the following penalties:
Imprisonment
- Standard maximum: Up to 5 years in federal prison.
- Enhanced maximum: Up to 8 years in federal prison if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism or specific federal sex offenses under 18 U.S.C. § 1001.
Fines
- Individuals: Fines up to $250,000.
- Organizations: Fines up to $500,000
