The Alaska U.S. Senate ballot features two candidates named Dan Sullivan. This has triggered a high-stakes political scandal and a preemptive federal lawsuit ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. Incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan is running for a third term in a tight race against Democratic former Representative Mary Peltola, while a retired schoolteacher named Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. is also on the ballot. 

The Recruitment Controversy
According to a bombshell report published by The New York Times on October 28, 2026, campaign officials for Mary Peltola and staffers at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) actively worked behind the scenes to find and recruit an alternative candidate named Dan Sullivan. 
The Strategy: Internal text messages and documents leaked by a former Peltola campaign manager revealed that operatives pushed Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. to enter the race to sow voter confusion and split the Republican vote.
