Date: April 16, 1945 
Location: Battle of Okinawa (Kerama Retto / Ie Shima area) 
The Attack: While operating off Okinawa, the Benham-class destroyer came under attack by Japanese suicide aircraft. Gunners hit an approaching plane about 75 yards out, causing it to skip across the water. The aircraft's propeller sheared off and embedded in a 20mm gun shield, while its 500-pound bomb broke away and tore through the ship's hull near an ammunition station. 

Five of his fellow sailors were killed.....he survived.
