Kevin Hassett, director of the White House's National Economic Council, downplayed Thursday's report, pointing to a positive trend for the labor market in previous months.
"If you smooth through the ups and downs over the last three or four months, we're on a really steep upward trajectory," Hassett told reporters.

There are currently 7.594 million available job openings in the United States, according to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This translates to a job opening rate of 4.6% nationally.
Among those not in the labor force who wanted a job, the number of people marginally attached to the labor force changed little at 1.8 million in June. These individuals wanted and were available for work and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months but had not looked for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. The number of discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached who believed that no jobs were available for them, was essentially unchanged in June at 477,000.
