By signing a deliberately vague Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Islamabad on June 17, 2026, I believe that the Trump administration set up Iran - while President Trump, Oman and Iraq worked together with Israel and the rest of the Gulf to neuter the IRGC.
While Iran believed the agreement would hand them de facto control over the Strait of Hormuz and their proxies - allowing them to establish tolls, inspections, and a new revenue stream run by the IRGC - the Trump administration had other plans.
Trump essentially pulled the rug out from under Iran’s primary source of leverage.
By opening a southern shipping corridor right along the Omani coast, they gave international tankers a clear way to completely bypass the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) checkpoints in the Hormuz Strait and northern routes.

Yes, it is true that commercial ships can physically pass through the Strait of Hormuz by using the southern corridor within Oman's territorial waters. However, there is not enough room or deep-water capacity to handle 100% of the strait's heavy, two-way global traffic exclusively within Omani waters without major logistical bottlenecks. [1, 2, 3]
It seems you're getting half the story from your source. She's announcing a victory that isn't. It's counting coup, perhaps - and embarrassment and aggravation to Iran, I imagine. But the death of Iran's maritime authority in the strait is greatly exaggerated.
It's not that your source is outright lying. Oman DOES disagree with Iran on how the fees for passage should be structured, and Oman DID invite traffic to hug its shore and thereby avoid the few kilometers of joint jurisdiction the two countries share in the middle of the strait. But your source's pretense that this is a long term solution is partisan and incorrect.

There's a way to trickle ships through without touching Iranian waters. There's no way to restore traffic to previous and necessary levels without involving Iran's waters.
It DOES appear that Oman is fingering Iran's *** - and I will admit that I am quite surprized by that. It doesn't fit the narrative I had of the situation - which was that Oman was moving away from the US and toward Iran. And if I was incorrect about that, it makes me wonder what else I have missed in this puzzle.
