There may be no better warning sign for Democrat-run cities and states than a company as wildly successful as Buc-ee’s deciding that some communities simply aren’t worth the trouble.

Buc-ee’s CEO Arch “Beaver” Aplin III recently made it clear that the Texas-based travel-center giant is increasingly interested in expanding in places where leaders and residents appreciate what the company brings to their communities. At a recent grand opening in Arkansas, Aplin said that life is too short to try to build in places that don’t appreciate what Buc-ee’s is bringing. That statement should make politicians sit up and pay attention.

Buc-ee’s is not some struggling mom-and-pop operation looking for an excuse to leave. It is an enormously successful company that creates jobs, attracts travelers, generates economic activity and invests millions of dollars into communities. Its typical travel centers span roughly 74,000 square feet and can create more than 200 jobs.

So when a company like this starts saying, “We would rather build somewhere else,” the question shouldn’t simply be, “Why won’t they come here?” The better question is: What are we doing that makes them want to go somewhere else?
