An ex was an assistant to Nancy Friday (google her). 

Nancy had a fancy wedding at the Rainbow Room and her neighbor, the totally fabulous Peter Allen, was the entertainment. 

Apparently 1/3 of the way through the dessert course, the waiters started snatching away plates and utensils, on orders from Mr. Allen....lest there be 
any distractions from his blistering rendition of "When My Baby Smiles At Me I Go To Rio"
