We have a new contestant in the "Let Them Eat Cake" finals......Iran aims to avoid using mazut at power plants this winter but may have to burn it if energy consumption does not fall and imports prove insufficient, the head of the government’s energy optimization agency said on Friday. Esmail Saghab-Esfahani said the amount burned would depend on conservation by households and industry, as well as the availability of energy imports. He said it was too early to estimate how much mazut might be used.

Candidate Trump pledged to slash “energy and electricity prices by half”, to get “gasoline below $2 a gallon”, and to bring down “airfares and housing costs”. He has failed to do any of those things. Gas now averages $4.28 a gallon nationally, according to AAA. Yale Budget Lab says Trump’s tariffs will cost the average household $1,100 this year, while Moody’s Analytics says the war with Iran has already cost US households about $2,000 from higher energy, fuel and transportation costs and from higher interest rates

President Donald Trump repeatedly predicted that the U.S.–Israel war with Iran would last 4 to 5 weeks or 4 to 6 weeks following its start in late February 2026.
- Shifted Claims: As the conflict extended past its initial window, Trump later claimed his 4-to-6-week timeline applied only to eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat or that the military phase was completed early, though fact-checkers noted his original statements referred to the overall conflict.
- Current Status: Now in its seventh month, Trump has stated the war will end "soon" or shortly after the November midterm elections.
- Initial Estimates: In March 2026, Trump and administration officials stated across multiple instances that the entire military operation (Operation Epic Fury) would take roughly 4 to 6 weeks.
