Sure.  And by any definition of variant it has been change. But the Colt AR 15 was significantly changed so it was no different in function from any other semiautomatic.  It doesn't shoot faster, the weapon does not make the round anymore powerful, and per the DOD it is not an assault rifle.

When you can articulate in your own words what makes the AR 15 STYLE weapon any different than any other other SEMI AUTOMATIC then you will prove you understand.
